We Did it Our Way

Hull comedy festival closes for a third year, and we look back at a fun and successful couple of weeks.

Big names, local acts, touring shows, and tonnes of new acts have triumphed on stage at arguably the best festival yet.

Last night's Hull Comedy Awards were a fitting way to end the festival. The Art of Comedy showcases were awarded show of the year, Carnivale 69 pipped several other great clubs to the comedy club of the year, the Nat Turner Revue received the Director's Pick of the Festival, and Agraman the Human Anagram was presented with the outstanding contribution to Hull comedy award - not sure he knew what was going on, so we figure when he finds his trophy the morning after it'll start to make sense.

Gareth Urwin was awarded the Tenfoot City Comedian of the Year, with Andrew Ryan placed second. Controversy aside, congratulations to Gareth!

Perhaps even more controversially, Hull Comedy Festival Director John Gilbert was awarded a surprise lifetime achievement award (I'm only 29 for Christ's sake and don't like writing about myself in the third person!)

Hull Comedy Festival could not be such a success without the hard work and benevolence of many great people. On behalf of the partners, supporters, acts, promoters, volunteers, venues, and all around good eggs - we hope you enjoyed Hull Comedy Festival 2009!

"Regrets? We've had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
We did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

We planned each charted course -
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
We did it our way."
